(P.S.
Hot diggity dog I really intended for this to be like a three-sentence email. I have colossally fucked up my workday good god I am in the weeds now.

But I really hope that you will read all of this (obviously not right now it's a fucking novel sry) and read it carefully, and even reread it later on in a different state of mind. And then again. Because I think this one was really worth reading and examining and reflecting on. Gtg bye I am so fucked I have so much work to do ahhh - this letter was written with serious empathy and love and I hope it shows! No time for proofreading I rly gtg holy shit)

The tone of this message is written business-neutral start to finish. With a little touch of kind but softly sad empathy toward the end. Somewhat sensitive subject following a scuffed evening, but no bitterness or bad mood or anything like that. Just exchanging information.

Know you're busy, so am I. I'll try to keep notes to a minimum. (P.S. LOL)

I still need your number if you want me to get an estimate for you so that you don't have to go anywhere in person with me.

Also need driver's license number, date, and expiry. I'd prefer not to receive them in text. And if you don't want to give them to me but still want the quote I'll just drive to New Braunfels and get them from our written records.

(This section is not an attack or demand, tone is still within what one would accept as normal in a business meeting, even if a bit dry.) I would also like to know what "ready" means to you in regards to treating me like a normal human being you're capable of talking to face to face; what conditions need to be met and what steps need to be taken to meet them and by whom for you to feel ready. Because we could get several months worth of these emails covered in a matter of hours and I really do want you to be completely free of me as soon as possible. I don't love being dragged along indefinitely, I feel like your pet antagonist.

(Here comes the softer parts) We have to stop spacing this out so much - I don't see us making the progress we need to in order to get this finished, going on the way we have.

I know you don't like our talks when we talk about things that hurt, but pain is entirely possible to experience within a place of safety. That's often the only way healing is possible. You can feel unsafe and still be safe, like Chai getting her teeth brushed. You can feel safe and be unsafe, like people taking refuge from problems by ignoring them. You may feel scared, nervous, that's normal. You may feel hurt, and it's important to distinguish whether that pain is being inflicted on you maliciously, unintentionally, or as a normal part of a mutual effort to heal. Is it the pain of a wound being opened for the purpose of causing harm? Is it the pain of a field surgeon doing a poor job stitching a wound? Are they doing a poor job but trying their best, or are they shaking because they're scared or also in pain, or are they being careless, or do they not realize they're botching it, or are you making it difficult to do properly by sabotaging the effort intentionally or unintentionally? Or is it the pain of a friend opening an incision to remove a barb buried in your flesh? Is it the pain of being the friend? Is it the pain of being the field surgeon? Do you see how pain and safety can fit together in so many different ways?

And I know you feel like we talk in circles about certain things and go nowhere, but your feelings don't define an objective reality, they're just one component of a complex and cyclical mental ecosystem along with perceptions, intentions, decisions, healthy and unhealthy coping mechanisms, mature and immature psychological defenses, cognitive distortions, a Rumsfeld Matrix of self-awareness, biases, desires, moods, physical state of being, and so much more.

You can't control the entire system from any single niche within it. You have to nurture the pieces deliberately and you have to work hard to understand what you're doing and how you're doing it and how it affects and is affected by every other component of the system if you're going to have any chance at making real progress in your own life. And in relationships of any sort, you have to factor in trust. The interaction of two ecosystems is too complex to completely map out for anyone except probably slightly insane academics who are also deeply in love, so humans developed trust as a modulator for strengthening the connections, the shared network, for deepening the integration of ecosystems. And for gently disintegrating connections with minimal harm. When, where, and how trust is pulled will each have its own ramifications for both ecosystems.

We revisit certain points a lot because they're central hubs to a lot of other details, and even though you can't see it from your point of view, I have an enormous amount of therapeutic context with which I make the promise that revisiting things over and over is the only way the most complex problems get solved. Even though our friendship and romantic relationship have been completely uprooted, the depth that those entwined roots had reached between us make us the only people who can truly help each other heal those deepest wounds. It won't be pleasant, but as someone who has experienced such wounds and the effects of applying various methodologies in attempt to heal them over the course of decades, with and without cooperation, medication, professional and unprofessional guidance, etc., I truly believe that it's worth experiencing upsetting conversations to heal. You'll never be ready if you're waiting to feel like you can talk to me or look at me without being upset, and you'll never truly heal if you try to ignore the wounds until they scar over. And if we never truly heal, we'll never truly be free of each other.

We should talk about the things we absolutely have to talk about in order to get me out of your life as soon as possible.

We should also talk about why things are the way they are. How we got here. That same conversation you hate having. The biggest difference now is that the roots have been completely pulled, there is no more harm you can do to me.

Feeling sad or frustrated or angry or in pain doesn't explicitly mean that you are unsafe, it doesn't explicitly mean you are experiencing harm.

You can still cause me pain, you can scare me and disappoint me and hurt me, but you can't cause me harm. I may still cause you pain, but I don't think I can cause you harm. I promise anyway I won't intentionally cause you harm, and if you ever feel that I am causing you harm, I promise to pull back and examine those feelings with you, listen to you and believe you and not undermine or invalidate you, so that we can look at the wound together and decide whether I'm botching the stitches intentionally or just doing a bad job. But we should talk about the things that cause us pain. We should do it with the trust that we will feel pain as part of that conversation and that we won't cause pain maliciously, and that we'll stop and examine pain and be honest with each other until our sutures are set and our futures are free.

Always more to say, of course.

I don’t like that you think you can say things like you did in your previous email when you’re upset and then be happy to move on and expect me to just take it.

That being said, I was upset last night. I’ve been pretty upset all day today and it’s been hard to work. I don’t want to revisit the breakup conversation and honestly I don’t believe it would be fruitful. I don’t remember so much from last year, I don’t remember the exact things I said so all I can go off of is feelings.

You put a lot of emphasis on things said and specific fraises and I can’t really argue about what I said or you said or what was promised and what was not because I don’t remember. It’s frustrating and I wish it wasn’t this way but that’s what im dealing with. Im not ready to see you because im still angry. I can’t help being angry and I nothing you say will stop me from being angry. I feel like im making progress but these conversations make me feel like they set me back more than move me forward. I don’t know what ready looks like but I think time will get me there more than anything. I hear what you’re saying about pushing through to heal faster but I just don’t agree and I don’t have to.

You still believe that I manipulated you into some false sense of security that then caused to spiral and intentionally kept you away from my friends so I could later paint you like the villain.

There’s many things I would have done differently but I genuinely tried to do did the best I could at the time. I never deliberately lied. I know this. If I said anything that didn’t end up happening it’s because I genuinely hoped it to be true. Things change though. At the time you felt very emotionally unpredictable to me and I was trying to protect both of us. Yes I know that ended up backfiring and I wish I could go back in time and change it.

I’ve come to terms with being the villain in your story and I can see how some of it is justified from your perspective.

I really much preferred where we were at before this conversation so I would like to give us the opportunity to go back to that. As a token of good faith I would like to comment that the cigarette bit was funny and I found it amusing.

I have a lot of notes on a lot of that but I'll spare you most of them. I don't expect you to just take it, and the breakup conversation isn't specifically something I meant we need to revisit. The conversation I want to have with you is about why and how things are the way they are right now. It's okay for you to be angry. I wish you would just be angry at me and let it out and feel it and explore it to my face. I have no intention of arguing or dismantling your feelings or perspective or trying to invalidate you or blame you or even share anything with you that you don't specifically ask me to share. But I feel like you could just do that and see that I'm not going to try to make you feel wrong for it, and then you would have more clarity on whether you intend to keep me blocked forever or if that was the only thing in the way of keeping me a prisoner of memory. Time will not help. You will scar over and care less as time goes on, but I assert that we, and you, and I, deserve a better goodbye than that.

I'm upset too. I thought last night was going to be a good, positive, quick conversation. I was happy that you were goingI think we got derailed because you were upset about the truck and I explained too much and too poorly and tied it together with context that I didn't realize was going to sound so aggressive until after I said it and discovered that I was becoming nervous and defensive. I could have and should have handled that better, and I'm sorry for my part in that.

It was also difficult for me to gain a sense of composure after you left me waiting four and a half hours for a confirmation of our plan, and then after I figured you were going to ghost, you sent me "I'll try", which meant I still didn't know whether to expect you or not. It was very frustrating and I believed that you didn't do it on purpose but I was also conflicted about whether I was lying to myself to protect you from judgment of your actions - which have been consistently unempathetic toward me in the extreme for a very long time now. Even if you had the empathy in your heart or mind, your actions are how you affect the world around you. I was so happy yesterday because of the Snapchat memories that came up from 9 years ago. I was happy you were going to go out and have fun and it made me feel good even though we weren't celebrating. But to really drive the pain home, when I opened up those memories while I was waiting for your response, I saw a new one at the end from a year or so later, a video of you and the guys and him, where we were celebrating his birthday. So I was left alone in my apartment putting effort into project I never wanted to exist toward an outcome I never wanted to occur for a person I love who has minimized and devalued me time after time and who might or might not want to have nothing to do with me ever again and who has chosen to nurture a most horrifying friendship with another person whom I once loved who betrayed me in the most vile of ways, and they might even be out together celebrating his birthday and dancing his music in a reality that couldn't possibly be further from the one in the pictures I had been smiling at all day. I do not hold any of this against you. This is all on me. I'm serious. I only tell you all this because I hope you can sympathize, if not just take pity on me for being who I am.

And I want to be very extra clear that I do not think you are wrong. I don't think you are right, either. I don't think that you hurt me intentionally, but I do think that you don't necessarily care or have cared about whether I will be hurt or not by something you do if it's something you want to do. I think you are selfish and rash, but you aren't the villain in my story. You're the ironic tragedy. You're not a character at all. You're the writing, the poetry, the heartache, the foolishness, the human experience, the comedy, the romance, the love, the fire, the ice, the wilderness, the comraderie, the life, the plot.

I just want to keep reading.

I don't hate you. I don't think you're wrong. I don't think you are the essence of any snapshot of your actions. You're just you. You're the same evolving you that you've always been. Two things can be true at the same time; you have done things that have caused me immeasurable pain, and I truly do not blame you for anything.

I wish you were brave enough to just face me. I'm sad that your anger means we have to miss out on the Geminids. On a lot of things. I'm sad those things don't matter to you. I don't think you're wrong, or bad. I just think a lot of things, and I think a lot about you.

I'm glad you liked my bit. I really did still go through all that and came to the conversation with positive intentions. I'm genuinely happy that one landed :'-)

Thanks for letting me know

Oh dude I've been here before, you probably have too. I forget what it's called, the pearl room or something? Go in the hotel right off Rainey, up the staircase to the left, very bourgeois THE QUILL ROOM yeah it's that but with the huge ballroom opened up

Also I'm the only one here 🙃
